Reflections of Time, digital art created on canvas

Reflections of Time. Digital art created on canvas. August 10, 2024. Afrika Abney

“Red symbolizes the blood of the people that is shed in the ongoing struggle for Black liberation. Black represents the people of Black African ancestry. Green represents the abundance and resilience of the Black community.”

Reflections of Time - This name implies that the painting serves as a mirror to the past, with the colors representing different facets of history – red, black and green.

To define my past is to understand my past began in the 1970s when Washington, D.C. was filled with African - Americans.

The title "Reflections of Time" suggests that the artwork acts as a lens through which the past can be examined, with its vibrant colors symbolizing various elements of historical narratives—specifically, the hues of red, black, and green. Each color carries its own significance, evoking emotions and memories that resonate with the viewer, thereby creating a dialogue between the present and the historical experiences that have shaped it. This interplay of color and meaning invites a deeper contemplation of the events and cultural shifts that have occurred over time.

To articulate my personal history is to recognize that my journey commenced in the 1970s, a pivotal decade marked by a significant African American presence in Washington, D.C. This era was characterized by a rich tapestry of cultural expression, social movements, and community solidarity, all of which played a crucial role in shaping the identity of the city and its inhabitants. The vibrancy of this period not only influenced my own experiences but also contributed to a broader narrative of resilience and empowerment within the African American community.

Understanding my past requires an exploration of the socio-political landscape of the 1970s, a time when Washington, D.C. became a focal point for African American activism and cultural renaissance. The city was alive with the sounds of music, art, and literature that reflected the struggles and triumphs of its people.

Afrika Abney  BrightBlend Techniques is a digital abstract painting composed of colors and various brush techniques. Some colors include orange, red, and blue. All three of the colors represent creativity.  According to my research, “the use of various brush techniques creates a rich tapestry of texture within the artwork. The dynamic relationship between light and shadow, skillfully rendered through these different strokes, infuses the piece with vitality and a sense of motion. This deliberate layering invites viewers to delve deeper into the work, fostering a greater appreciation for the intricacies and purpose that lie behind each individual brushstroke.”

Gentle Rain

Gentle Rain. Digital art created on canvas. September 28, 2024. Afrika Abney The season of Autumn 2024 commenced just six days ago, and on this rainy Saturday morning, I woke up from my restful sleep a couple of hours ago. The sound of raindrops tapping against the window provided a soothing backdrop as I prepared to embrace the day ahead. This weekend, I have dedicated my time to focusing on my branding and delving into the creation of my digital artwork, both of which are essential components of my creative journey. Have a creative weekend.
