April is National Poetry Month

"In a proclamation issued on April 1, 1996, Former President Bill Clinton declared: "National Poetry Month offers us a welcome opportunity to celebrate not only the unsurpassed body of literature produced by our poets in the past, but also the vitality and diversity of voices reflected in the works of today's American poetry….Their creativity and wealth of language enrich our culture and inspire a new generation of Americans to learn the power of reading and writing at its best."In addition, similar official National Poetry Month proclamation have been issued by mayors from towns and cities across the country, including New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, Tucson, and Washington, D.C.." “Painting is poetry that is seen rather than felt, and poetry is the painting that is felt rather than seen.” – Leonardo da Vinci “ Music expresses that which cannot be put into words and that which cannot remain silent” – Victor Hugo “Poetry is the revolution and the ra

Wrapping Up Women's History Month

“Why compare yourself to others? No one is the entire world can do a better job of being you than you.” Anonymous Women's History Month by calendar is coming to close. By my own standards, it continues. Because, I am a woman who does not believe in gossiping, spreading lies, and passing unkind words. Therefore, I have no time wasting on making comparisons. I have spent Women's History Month recognizing many women who have made a difference.  Now, I am not understanding what is the thrill on insulting and disrespecting women? Do you think that I am interested in listening to your disrespectful remarks? Do you think that it is acceptable to continue to harass women?                                             Untitled #18. How Do I feel?

Some people have asked me many times, how do I feel? I respond ok because I do not care to elaborate. If you have paid attention to my facial expressions and tone in my voice, you will know how I feel. Stop asking me how do I feel, if you are going to treat me like an animal or do not exist.  If you need a visual, I feel like this blank canvas. Blank and heart broken.  All of my life, I have seen people come and go, and I have all kinds of experiences with different people. I will never ever forget how people make me feel and treat me.                                                    How Do I feel? Digital art created on canvas. Afrika Abney

On Petite Women

" You don't need to be 'petite' to be beautiful. Being 'curvy' doesn't mean your 'fat.'"- Unknown "When people meet me in person, they're usually surprised at how petite I am because there's just [an] idea that because I'm black I just look a certain way.-" Misty Copeland   There are many petite women that know me and that I have met many years ago. Some of them include: Akua Akoto Afia Akoto Kadiatou Conte Dr. Berryman-Johnson Dr. Hazel Harper Carlo Perlo Sylvia Soumah Maria Tukeva Kathryn Larkin Elizabeth Thompson Brittany Rytter Debbie Pridgen Oni Faida Eloise Greenfield Now, what is the point of picking on petite women? Are you attracted to petite women? Or do you just like harassing them? Try to get to know the person before passing quick judgements. Personally, as a petite women for over 20 years, I am tired of people picking on me because of my height. I am more than my height and s

Joy

“I define joy as a sustained sense of well-being and internal peace – a connection to what matters.” – Oprah Winfrey                                    There are many things that brings me joy. One of them is painting.                                                              Joy. Digital art created on canvas. Afrika Abney

A Sense of Style

A sense of style has to do with personality characteristic traits not what you wear. Therefore, people who go around making poor judgements, assumptions and bullying me repeatedly have no sense of style because bullying someone repeatedly who has done nothing to you, benefits whom? A sense of style is composed of kindness, humanity, empathy and understanding. I have exhibited these traits for over 25 years. Stop body shaming and staring at women's body mass. That is a form of sexual harassment. Is your sense of style have to do with sexuality or humanity?

I am a woman

I am a woman. I will not allow people to continue to be mean, disrespectful and bully me. Why am I dealing with all of these negative behaviors during Women's History Month and beyond for many years?    Do you think shaming, mocking and degrading people, especially women, is a remarkable idea? If you do, then, you need to ask yourself why do you think you are so perfect? No one is perfect and everyone has a past.    Just because my body and shape is different from other women, does not make a woman. I am a woman because I was born a female. I am a woman that is against many types of behavior. Most importantly, I am a woman who believes in equality, justice, ethics, and boundaries.    “Women belong in all places where decisions are being made … It shouldn’t be that women are the exception.” - Ruth Bader Ginsburg   “Each time a woman stands up for herself, without knowing it possibly, without claiming it, she stands up for all women.” - Maya Angelou   “There’s power in all
