“Abstract Expressionist art is non-representational and is characterized by large brush strokes, random patterns, and a sense of spontaneity. Abstract Expressionist artworks often show motion or the movement made by the artist in the act of making the painting. Even artists who did not create their artwork by using big movements or gestures did, in many cases, achieve a sense of implied movement in the finished artwork by how they made marks on the canvas.”
I created some abstract expressionist work using an app that was released in November 1985. During that time, I was 9 years old and a student at NationHouse. As a black female and D.C. native, I was inspired by many visual artists.
The series titled "Abstract Narratives 1 -7" is a culmination of my reflections on these pressing social issues, presented in a visual and thought-provoking manner. Each canvas tells a different story, inviting viewers to interpret and engage with the artwork on a personal level.Swirl brushstrokes and gestural movements using random colors, I have weaved onto the digital canvas views of life, experiences and unanswered questions about ongoing injustices, stereotypes, racial profiling and misconceptions about abstract art. I aim to challenge traditional notions of beauty and provoke conversations about systemic inequalities that impact marginalized communities.
It is a testament to the power of digital art as a vehicle for social commentary and self-expression.
