Insightful Reflections

Insightful Reflections. Digital art created on canvas. September 10, 2024. Afrika Abney My reflections on politics often evoke a palette of somber hues. I perceive political involvement as fundamentally linked to the ideals of integrity and a dedication to the welfare of the community. It is imperative that honesty remains at the forefront of political endeavors, as it serves not only as a moral principle but also as a crucial element in building trust with the electorate. Without this trust, the very fabric of democratic engagement begins to fray, undermining the relationship between leaders and the people they represent.

Working in Museums/Galleries

I had the opportunity to work in many museums and art galleries in the past. Some of them include: The New Harlem Gallery (1992-1993) and the Phillips Collection (2000). Additionally, I provided services for the Anacostia Art Gallery and Boutique from 2010 – 2011 and I have exhibited my artwork  widely throughout the East Coast at such places as Emma Mae Gallery (Washington, DC), The New Harlem Gallery (New York City, New York), Wisteria ArtSpace (New York City, New York), Corcoran Gallery of Art (Washington, DC), Market 5 Gallery (Washington, DC), and The Phillips Collection (Washington, DC). I believe that working in a museum and gallery as a professional visual artist is both inspirational and frustrating. “Most museum people will tell you that they love their jobs. Some especially enjoy working with the public. They enjoy giving programs, explaining exhibits, and answering questions. ... Working across the street at a company would not give them the respect and place wit...

Afrika Abney “Autumnal Expressions encapsulate the essence of the fall season, a time when nature undergoes a remarkable transformation. As the days grow shorter and temperatures begin to drop, the landscape is painted in dark brown, deep dark brown, deep red and deep magenta. This seasonal shift not only affects the environment but also evokes a range of emotions and reflections. The beauty of autumnal expressions lies not only in the visual splendor of the season but also in the deeper meanings and emotions it inspires in creativity and productivity.”

The job market in Washington, DC in 1992

“ In 1992, the job market in Washington, D.C. presented a complex landscape for African Americans, marked by both progress and persistent challenges. While the city's burgeoning government sector offered some opportunities, particularly in fields like social services and education, racial disparities remained deeply entrenched. African Americans often faced discriminatory hiring practices, limited access to higher-paying positions, and a concentration in lower-wage, service-oriented jobs. The legacy of segregation and systemic racism continued to impact employment prospects, leading to higher unemployment rates and a widening wealth gap compared to their white counterparts. However, the growing civil rights movement and increasing awareness of racial inequality fostered a climate of activism and advocacy, pushing for greater diversity and inclusion in the workplace. This period saw the rise of organizations and initiatives aimed at addressing these disparities, paving the way for...

Stencil Printing

“Stenciling is an artistic technique that enables the reproduction of designs by applying ink or paint through cut-out shapes in materials such as cardboard or metal onto a chosen surface. This method shares similarities with screen printing, as both techniques involve the careful application of a design while utilizing a medium to block out areas that should remain unprinted. The accuracy inherent in stenciling facilitates the transfer of detailed patterns and images, ensuring they are rendered with both clarity and uniformity.” In 1992, I embarked on a creative project titled Kuumba Suras/The Creative Figures of Africa, which centered around the art of stencil printing. It involved the use of the letter A, incorporating a vibrant palette of colors including purple, gray, magenta, and yellow, all set against a crisp white background. The choice of colors and the simplicity of the letterform were intended to evoke a sense of cultural significance and artistic expression. During t...

FATHERLESS DAUGHTER SYNDROME

"Since childhood, fathers have a critical impact on their daughters’ lives as they are both their first guides to the outside world and their first reflections of themselves, symbol of recognition of their own value. A healthy and uninterrupted relationship between a father and a daughter greatly helps to create a positive self-image and therefore will have a positive influence on her aspirations and relationships. When this relationship is suddenly broken for some reason, the daughter’s cycle of identity development is also interrupted. Adolescence and preadolescence are critical times where young women build themselves: their body change, they make a transition from girls to young women, and in this transition, the father’s role is important.
