Identity and pride

The spectrum of colors available to me is vast, and I find myself drawn to many of them. Yet, there is something about the color black that resonates deeply with me. As an African-American woman, I feel a unique connection to this hue, which often symbolizes strength, elegance, and resilience. Black is not just a color; it embodies a sense of identity and pride that I carry with me.

While I appreciate a variety of shades and tones, my heart consistently gravitates towards black. This preference is not merely aesthetic; it reflects a deeper cultural significance. For me, wearing black is a celebration of my heritage and an expression of my individuality. It serves as a canvas that allows me to showcase my personality and style, while also connecting me to a broader narrative of empowerment and beauty within me.

In a world filled with vibrant colors, black remains the color that I would continue to wear as it represents not just my personal style, but also my cultural pride and the strength I embody as an African-American woman.

Djimo Kouyate

Djimo Kouyate was from the Malinké tribe, a sub-group of the Mandingo people. Born in Tambacounda, Senegal, he was from a distinguished family of griots who trace their ancestry back to the thirteenth century. A master kora player and a fine singer and dancer, Djimo also played a variety of other instruments including balafon (wooden xylophone), drums, and other string instruments. He worked with the Senegalese National Ballet as a singer and dancer since 1960, and was a founding member of the National Instrumental Ensemble of Senegal."
