Artistic Solidarity

Artistic Solidarity. Digital art created on canvas. August 30, 2024. Afrika Abney

“The colors associated with Labor Day are red, white, and blue, symbolizing the patriotic spirit of the holiday. These hues not only reflect the American flag but also evoke a sense of unity and pride among workers across the nation. As a day dedicated to honoring the contributions of laborers, the use of these colors serves to remind us of the values of hard work and solidarity that underpin the American workforce.

Regrettably, the ideals of solidarity have not been fully realized, as issues of racism and discrimination continue to persist in various forms within society. Despite efforts to promote unity and equality, these negative forces remain entrenched, hindering progress towards a more inclusive and harmonious community. The ongoing struggle against these societal challenges highlights the need for continued advocacy and action to foster genuine solidarity among diverse groups.

Labor Day within the context of abstract painting serves as a significant occasion to reflect on the artistic endeavors and contributions of painters who have dedicated their lives to this expressive form. This day not only honors the hard work and creativity that artists pour into their craft but also highlights the importance of abstract painting as a vital movement in the art world. It encourages appreciation for the innovative techniques and emotional depth that characterize abstract works, inviting viewers to engage with the art on a personal level. As artists celebrate their achievements and the labor that goes into creating thought-provoking pieces, Labor Day becomes a moment to recognize the transformative power of art and its ability to challenge perceptions and inspire new ideas.”

FATHERLESS DAUGHTER SYNDROME

"Since childhood, fathers have a critical impact on their daughters’ lives as they are both their first guides to the outside world and their first reflections of themselves, symbol of recognition of their own value. A healthy and uninterrupted relationship between a father and a daughter greatly helps to create a positive self-image and therefore will have a positive influence on her aspirations and relationships. When this relationship is suddenly broken for some reason, the daughter’s cycle of identity development is also interrupted. Adolescence and preadolescence are critical times where young women build themselves: their body change, they make a transition from girls to young women, and in this transition, the father’s role is important. The job market in Washington, DC in 1992

“ In 1992, the job market in Washington, D.C. presented a complex landscape for African Americans, marked by both progress and persistent challenges. While the city's burgeoning government sector offered some opportunities, particularly in fields like social services and education, racial disparities remained deeply entrenched. African Americans often faced discriminatory hiring practices, limited access to higher-paying positions, and a concentration in lower-wage, service-oriented jobs. The legacy of segregation and systemic racism continued to impact employment prospects, leading to higher unemployment rates and a widening wealth gap compared to their white counterparts. However, the growing civil rights movement and increasing awareness of racial inequality fostered a climate of activism and advocacy, pushing for greater diversity and inclusion in the workplace. This period saw the rise of organizations and initiatives aimed at addressing these disparities, paving the way for...

Harmony in Green

Harmony in Green. Digital art created on canvas. August 14, 2024. Afrika Abney  Harmony in Green is a captivating abstract digital artwork that embodies the principles of quality and balance, with a particular emphasis on the myriad shades of green. This color, often associated with tranquility and renewal, serves as a powerful symbol of both harmony and excellence.  “The essence of excellence and balance is often encapsulated in the concepts of quality and harmony. Quality refers to the standard of something as measured against other things of a similar kind, emphasizing the importance of superior craftsmanship, durability, and functionality. It is the hallmark of products and services that stand out in a crowded marketplace, where consumers increasingly seek assurance that their choices are not only reliable but also enriching. Harmony, on the other hand, speaks to the seamless integration of various elements, creating a sense of unity and coherence.”

Stencil Printing

“Stenciling is an artistic technique that enables the reproduction of designs by applying ink or paint through cut-out shapes in materials such as cardboard or metal onto a chosen surface. This method shares similarities with screen printing, as both techniques involve the careful application of a design while utilizing a medium to block out areas that should remain unprinted. The accuracy inherent in stenciling facilitates the transfer of detailed patterns and images, ensuring they are rendered with both clarity and uniformity.” In 1992, I embarked on a creative project titled Kuumba Suras/The Creative Figures of Africa, which centered around the art of stencil printing. It involved the use of the letter A, incorporating a vibrant palette of colors including purple, gray, magenta, and yellow, all set against a crisp white background. The choice of colors and the simplicity of the letterform were intended to evoke a sense of cultural significance and artistic expression. During t...
