Father Absence. Digital art created on canvas. Afrika Abney
As an
adult and consultant, Ms. Afrika Abney strongly believes the most
painful, dreadful and difficult experience to face is growing up without
a father in the home. Her father divorced her mother at an extremely
early age and while Ms. Abney was a student at NationHouse. When she was
a student at NationHouse from 1978-1991, Ms. Abney wondered why many of
the men had multiple wives. She never understood that philosophy. This
concept to her leaves girls confused. Furthermore, it makes them
experience forms of neglect, or other issues because they are
essentially sharing their father with other women. Those women may or
may not become pregnant.
She had encountered many of the symptoms that revolve around father absence at the age of 5. Ms. Abney believes that the problem now with today's society is that more men are not straight and this would add to the contribution of Fatherless issues.
Unfortunately, there are many adult woman like Ms. Abney who has experienced this issue. Since 2004, she has worked with Esther Productions, Inc and the organization has hosted many programs revolved around fatherless girls and women. It is important to speak about this issue with the community to prevent a widespread of violence, lack of interest in activities and importance of belonging.
As a result of father absence, some children do not complete their education. Fortunately, Ms. Abney completed her education, but was tremendously struggling without proper support. Nevertheless, Ms. Abney has had many accomplishments coupled with failures, disappointments, and many other things. She believes that unless you have experienced father absence in your life, you may never understand the trials and tribulations that fatherless girls or women has faced or continues to face. Sometimes, life does not go according to plan, but it is important to empower and strengthen girls and women.
When girls and women are not shown unconditional love from birth, Ms. Abney believes that this is one of the reasons why their is such a huge focus on sexual orientation in relationships.
