Julee Dickerson - Thompson

"As an award-winning artist, Julee Dickerson-Thompson is known for her distinctive pen and ink illustrative style, airbrush paintings, and public art installations. Beginning with her residency at Zenith Gallery’s artist colony and subsequent participation in the inaugural exhibitions at the Evans-Tibbs Gallery and the Miya Gallery, Julee’s work is featured in exhibits and collections at galleries, museums, and “alternative spaces” throughout the United States.

Seeking to integrate influences from her travels and studies in West Africa, the Caribbean, the American South, and Paris, France, Julee experiments with mixed-media, soft sculptures, quilts, and doll-making. Often moving between fine art, illustrations, and literature, Julee is also an author, and one of her most recognized books is The Dance of the Rain Gods, published by Africa World Press. Regardless of the medium, her work often incorporate themes of Black feminism, peace promotion, inter-faith symbolism, and inter-generational relationships.

Julee Dickerson-Thompson is a native Washingtonian and life-long resident of the Brookland community. When she was a teenager, the Workshops for Careers in the Arts (now Duke Ellington School of the Arts) planted the seeds for a career as a multi-media artist and illustrator. Julee continued her art studies at Simmons College, the Massachusetts College of Art, and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the Corcoran College of Art."

Mia Duvall

"Mia Duvall is best known for her work as a collaborating muralist and art director on some of Washington, DC's most highly regarded and appreciated murals. The work of Mia Duvall is a reflection of a deep love and appreciation for color (and the principles and elements of art and design). Mia uses a variety of mediums in her artwork to express her love of color and color relationships. Her earliest memories of appreciating color were of watching her mother create masterful works of art in coloring books with ordinary crayons."She was so ingenious and gifted with seeing and using color. She inspired my love and appreciation for color. Learning to see and appreciate the vast spectrum of life's colors and the array of ways it occurs and exists (sometimes without us even noticing it) was one of the best gifts my mother has ever given me. My work is a reflection of this gift."

Mia Duvall is a native of the Anacostia area in Washington, DC and is a proud product of the District of Columbia public school system. Mia Duvall is also the founder, principal designer and art director at Mia Duvall Studios."

Golden Orb of Inspiration

Golden Orb of Inspiration. Digital art created on canvas. August 15, 2024. Afrika Abney  Last night, as I gazed up at the sky, the moon captured my attention with its luminous glow. It was a sight that stirred my imagination and inspired me to create. I decided to channel that inspiration into my digital abstract painting, where I chose to incorporate various shades of yellow. The warmth of the color seemed to echo the moon's gentle radiance, allowing me to express the beauty I felt in that moment.

Narrative Layers

Narrative Layers. Digital art created on canvas. October 2, 2024. Afrika Abney  I created Narrative Layers, a digital abstract painting, using layered brushstrokes and vibrant colors with the focal color - red. Red represents determination, courage, resilience, and creativity.  According to my research, “layered brushstrokes serve as a powerful representation of the different phases of artistic expression and emotional depth. Each stroke adds a unique texture and dimension, reflecting my evolving thoughts and feelings throughout the creative process. This technique not only enhances the visual appeal of the piece but also invites viewers to engage with the underlying story that unfolds within the layers.  Ultimately, the culmination of these layered brushstrokes results in a finished piece that resonates with a profound narrative.”

Resilience Reflections

Resilience Reflections. Digital art created on canvas. September 27, 2024. Afrika Abney Looking back on the difficulties I faced in the past, one particular experience stands out vividly: the autumn of 2020 during the pandemic in Washington, D.C. This period was marked by a unique set of challenges that tested my resilience and adaptability. The atmosphere was heavy with uncertainty as the world grappled with the implications of the COVID-19 crisis, and the vibrant city I once knew was transformed into a quieter, more subdued environment. “The Autumn of 2020 in Washington, D.C., was marked by the unprecedented challenges posed by the global pandemic. As the leaves began to change color and the air turned crisp, the city, usually bustling with activity, found itself navigating a new reality. Public spaces that once thrived with tourists and locals alike were now quieter, with many events canceled or modified to adhere to health guidelines. The vibrant energy of the capital was tem...
