Julee Dickerson - Thompson

"As an award-winning artist, Julee Dickerson-Thompson is known for her distinctive pen and ink illustrative style, airbrush paintings, and public art installations. Beginning with her residency at Zenith Gallery’s artist colony and subsequent participation in the inaugural exhibitions at the Evans-Tibbs Gallery and the Miya Gallery, Julee’s work is featured in exhibits and collections at galleries, museums, and “alternative spaces” throughout the United States.

Seeking to integrate influences from her travels and studies in West Africa, the Caribbean, the American South, and Paris, France, Julee experiments with mixed-media, soft sculptures, quilts, and doll-making. Often moving between fine art, illustrations, and literature, Julee is also an author, and one of her most recognized books is The Dance of the Rain Gods, published by Africa World Press. Regardless of the medium, her work often incorporate themes of Black feminism, peace promotion, inter-faith symbolism, and inter-generational relationships.

Julee Dickerson-Thompson is a native Washingtonian and life-long resident of the Brookland community. When she was a teenager, the Workshops for Careers in the Arts (now Duke Ellington School of the Arts) planted the seeds for a career as a multi-media artist and illustrator. Julee continued her art studies at Simmons College, the Massachusetts College of Art, and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the Corcoran College of Art."

Mia Duvall

"Mia Duvall is best known for her work as a collaborating muralist and art director on some of Washington, DC's most highly regarded and appreciated murals. The work of Mia Duvall is a reflection of a deep love and appreciation for color (and the principles and elements of art and design). Mia uses a variety of mediums in her artwork to express her love of color and color relationships. Her earliest memories of appreciating color were of watching her mother create masterful works of art in coloring books with ordinary crayons."She was so ingenious and gifted with seeing and using color. She inspired my love and appreciation for color. Learning to see and appreciate the vast spectrum of life's colors and the array of ways it occurs and exists (sometimes without us even noticing it) was one of the best gifts my mother has ever given me. My work is a reflection of this gift."

Mia Duvall is a native of the Anacostia area in Washington, DC and is a proud product of the District of Columbia public school system. Mia Duvall is also the founder, principal designer and art director at Mia Duvall Studios."

Well-established routine

When I wake up from my restful sleep,I initiate my day by following a well-established routine that I have meticulously crafted which sets the tone for my day. This routine encompasses various aspects of my professional life, including branding, the creation of digital art, and the delivery of my services. All of these activities are conveniently conducted from the comfort of my home, where I sit in front of my computer, ready to engage with my work.

Whispers of Color

I enjoy creating my art using vibrant hues of yellow-orange, purple, and magenta coupled with black and navy blue. “The hue of yellow-orange is frequently associated with qualities such as creativity, enthusiasm, and an overarching sense of optimism. This lively color radiates a spirited energy that can stimulate innovative thought and foster a positive perspective on life. Respect Spectrum

Respect Spectrum. Digital art created on canvas. September 18, 2024. Afrika Abney “The concept of Respect Spectrum encompasses a diverse array of colors, specifically shades of pink, purple, and blue. The Respect Spectrum is a multifaceted concept that incorporates a variety of colors, particularly emphasizing shades of pink, purple, and blue. Each of these colors is imbued with distinct meanings and cultural associations that contribute to the overarching theme of respect. Pink is often seen as a gentle and nurturing color, evoking feelings of compassion and understanding, which can foster an atmosphere of respect in interpersonal relationships. Purple, historically associated with royalty and nobility, conveys a sense of dignity and honor, making it a powerful color in contexts where respect is paramount. Blue, on the other hand, is commonly associated with trust and reliability, qualities that are essential in establishing and maintaining respectful interactions.”

Restful Blue

I woke from my restful sleep several hours ago. I chose various shades of blue using paintapp.  This choice was not arbitrary; I aimed to explore the calming and inspiring qualities that different shades of blue can evoke. Restful Blue is a solid blue background designed for creativity.  When examining Restful Blue, one can see hints of purple within this shade of blue.

Nature's Prelude

Nature's Prelude. Digital art created on canvas. September 23, 2024. Afrika Abney  “Nature's Prelude embodies the serene condition of the sky that heralds the arrival of rain, symbolizing a product that honors the exquisite rhythms of the natural world. This tranquil moment in the atmosphere serves as a precursor to the impending rainfall, which is poised to rejuvenate the landscape. The calmness that envelops the sky acts as a gentle reminder of the continuous cycles inherent in weather patterns.”

Intensity through purpose
