Past School Shooting Experiences

“During my time as a student from 1978 to 1993, I encountered several heartbreaking incidents of school shootings that took place in the vicinity of my school. Each of these events left a profound impact on me and my peers, creating an atmosphere of fear and uncertainty that overshadowed our educational experiences. The weight of such tragedies is difficult to articulate, but it is clear that they demand urgent attention and action to prevent further loss of life and to foster a safer environment for future generations. To truly address the issue of gun violence and its devastating effects on schools, we must engage in open and honest discussions about these incidents. It is essential that school assemblies serve as a platform for dialogue, where students can express their feelings and concerns in a supportive environment. Beyond the coverage by newspaper reporters and journalists, it is crucial for educators and administrators to facilitate these conversations, allowing students to p...

2016 Color Chronicles

2016 Color Chronicles. Digital art created on canvas. September 5, 2024. Afrika Abney The concept of the 2016 Color Chronicles introduces a narrative framework that emphasizes the importance of specific colors—namely blue, pink, and dark pink—in relation to the events of that year. This approach not only serves to illustrate the emotional landscape of 2016 but also invites a deeper exploration of how these colors can encapsulate personal experiences and collective sentiments. By focusing on these particular hues, the narrative seeks to convey a rich tapestry of feelings and memories that were prevalent during that time. Upon reflection, the colors that best represent the essence of 2016, a year that has since passed, are primarily blue and pink. These colors were deliberately selected for their emotional depth and their capacity to articulate the diverse experiences I navigated throughout that year. The choice of these specific shades is rooted in a profound connection to ...

Brown Empowerment

“Labor Day holds a significant place in the history and culture of African Americans, serving as a reminder of the ongoing struggle for labor rights and social justice. Originally established to honor the contributions of workers across the nation, this holiday also reflects the unique challenges faced by African Americans in the workforce. Historically, African Americans have encountered systemic barriers, including discrimination and unequal pay, which have shaped their experiences in the labor market. As a result, Labor Day not only celebrates the achievements of workers but also highlights the need for continued advocacy for equity and inclusion in employment. The observance of this day encourages reflection on the progress made and the work that remains to ensure that all individuals, regardless of race, can enjoy fair labor practices and opportunities for advancement.” As an African - American since I was a high school student in 1991, I have experienced racism and discrimi...

Dark chocolate

“The color is a deep, rich shade of brown that resembles the hue of dark chocolate or freshly brewed coffee, evoking a sense of warmth and earthiness. The representation of dark chocolate within the realm of abstract painting serves as a fascinating exploration of color, texture, and form. Artists often utilize the rich, deep hues associated with dark chocolate to evoke a sense of indulgence and sophistication, while the fluidity of abstract techniques allows for a dynamic interpretation of its essence. Through the interplay of bold brushstrokes and layered compositions, the visual experience can mimic the complexity of dark chocolate's flavor profile, inviting viewers to engage with the artwork on both an emotional and sensory level. This artistic approach not only highlights the aesthetic qualities of dark chocolate but also encourages a deeper contemplation of its cultural significance and the sensory pleasures it embodies.”

Afrocentric Journey

My Afrocentric journey began at the private Afrocentric institution known as NationHouse, where I attended from the age of two until I was fourteen. This school provided a unique cultural environment that emphasized the importance of African heritage and identity. While my formal education at NationHouse did not include visual arts, the experience was rich in lessons about the natural world and the vibrant spectrum of colors that exist within it. "NationHouse instilled in me a deep appreciation for African history, traditions, and values. The curriculum focused on celebrating the contributions of African civilizations and challenging Eurocentric narratives that often marginalized the achievements of people of African descent." As I reflect on my time at NationHouse, I am grateful for the Afrocentric education I received and the impact it has had on my personal and professional development. The values and principles instilled in me during those formative years continue to ...
