Ms. Joy Jones (trainer, performance poet, playwright and author of several books including Private Lessons: A Book of Meditations for Teachers; Tambourine Moon, which was selected as one of the best books for children by the black caucus of the ALA and seen on Fox TV’s hit show The Bernie Mac Show; Private Lessons:A Book of Meditations for Teachers (Andrews McMeel);Fearless Public Speaking (SparkNotes), Jayla Jumps In (Albert Whitman & Company, 2020 and Black Caucus of the American Library Association BCALA, 2020 Best of the Best Booklist); and Between Black Women: Listening with the Third Ear (African American Images) will talk about her journey becoming a children's author.

This the title of E. Miller's presentation. Mr. Miller (memoirist, award-winning poet and 2022 Grammy nominee for the Best Spoken Word Poetry Album--Black Men Are Precious, and author of several books) at Cleveland Park Library on April 20th for the event entitled: SEEING OURSELVES IN THE RIVER, IN THE MIRROR, IN THE WORLD: African Americans and Children's Literature On Tour.

"In small and important ways Black authors of children's literature have fortified, energized and empowered African Americans, making it possible with words and images for us to see ourselves--our authentic selves--and to believe in our abilities to change and lead the world in which we live. That contribution has been under-appreciated. SEEING OURSELVES IN THE RIVER, IN THE MIRROR, IN THE WORLD seeks to make clear the power of children's authors, the power of Black writers. "

Promoting cultural expression through literature and the arts

I am actively involved in offering my services, brand, and creating digital artwork. On August 27,2024 and August 29, 2024, I personally distributed flyers to promote an upcoming event organized by Esther Productions Inc., The Institute for African American Writing, and The Black Student Fund. This event is set to occur on September 14, 2024, at the Tenley Library, and it promises to be an enriching experience for all attendees. The event will take place from 2 PM to 4 PM, providing a fantastic opportunity for participants to delve into the realms of poetry and prose. It aims to celebrate the richness of African American literature and foster a deeper appreciation for the art of writing. I attended a DC Public School from 1991 - 1993 and graduated from the school when I was 16 which was in 1993. I attended Bell from 1991-1993. I graduated in 1993 and was 16 at that time. Years later, I donated the painting shown in the above photo. Additionally, I gave away the clothing articles and jewelry shown in the photo above. Brightwood Washington, DC

For the past 8 years, I have been actively involved more frequently in the Brightwood Area. In fact, I worked at Center City Brightwood Campus in 2013 when I served as a Reading Tutor. I have also disseminated numerous flyers in the area from 2018 - 2019 and again from August 2023 - October 2023. "Brightwood is one of DC's oldest upper NW neighborhoods. Founded as White Mill Seat in 1756, then Peter's Mill Seat, to Crystal Springs, then to Brighton around 1860, the neighborhood was primarily farmland and a haven for freed slaves."

Working in Museums/Galleries

I had the opportunity to work in many museums and art galleries in the past. Some of them include: The New Harlem Gallery (1992-1993) and the Phillips Collection (2000). Additionally, I provided services for the Anacostia Art Gallery and Boutique from 2010 – 2011 and I have exhibited my artwork widely throughout the East Coast at such places as Emma Mae Gallery (Washington, DC), The New Harlem Gallery (New York City, New York), Wisteria ArtSpace (New York City, New York), Corcoran Gallery of Art (Washington, DC), Market 5 Gallery (Washington, DC), and The Phillips Collection (Washington, DC).
