Parisa Norouzi, Empower DC

In May 2016, I met Ms. Norouzi when I provided services for Mr. Nader, Breaking through Power. "Parisa Norouzi  has over 20 years of experience working with nonprofit organizations and organizing communities.  After an early career as an organizer in the environmental movement, Parisa co-founded the city-wide community organizing group Empower DC in 2003, an organization which works to build the confident self-advocacy and organized political power of low-moderate income DC residents with a focus on fighting the displacement of residents amid DC’s gentrification boom.  At Empower DC she has led the organization’s Child Care for All Campaign and the People’s Property Campaign, leading to victories including winning funding for child care vouchers which ended the city’s waiting list for those services, and changing DC law to provide opportunity for public input into the “surplus and disposition” process for public property.  Since 2001, Parisa has worked alongside the

Importance of Humanity

“The purpose of human life is to serve, and to show compassion and the will to help others.” – Albert Schweitzer “The greatness of humanity is not in being human, but in being humane.” – Mahatma Gandhi Despite the recent news that have occurred outside of my hometown, I think it is important that humanity returns. How you treat another human being says alot of your character regardless of your race, sexual orientation or any other status. I do not care how you look, I am more interested in how you treat a person.  Humanity is like relationships with colors. Do you combine warm colors with cool colors? Or hot colors with warm colors? For example, if you combine blue with yellow, you get green. Green is a color that represents earth and nature.  Color Relationships.Digital art created on canvas. Afrika Abney

Beautiful Black People

“This is the world you have made yourself, now you have to live in it.” ― Nina Simone "To me, we are the most beautiful creatures in the whole world. Black people. And I mean that in every sense." - Nina Simone " Nina Simone, original name Eunice Waymon, (born February 21, 1933, Tryon, North Carolina, U.S.—died April 21, 2003, Carry-le-Rouet, France), American singer who created urgent emotional intensity by singing songs of love, protest, and Black empowerment in a dramatic style, with a rough-edged voice."                          Beautiful Black People. Stop Bullying

Stop bullying! I do not know how many times that I can express the fact that bullying is unwanted and repeated behavior. Some people are born petite and some people are not. I am petite. I attended NationHouse, Bell and the Corcoran. In each of these educational institutions, I experienced bullying. I am not a teenager. I was a teenager from 1989 - 1996.  When I interacted with teenagers as an adult, I find that many of them find being disrespectful and making jokes acceptable behavior. It is not. I refuse to stand by and remain silent when you know at a specific age that bullying is unkind behavior. Wrong is wrong and right is right.  Calling people all kinds of names because you want to have your candle brighter, benefits no one! The pandemic mandates since 2020 caused alot of people to experience many things. Mocking, making jokes and spreading false information about someone is bullying! Additionally, I have stated repeatedly that I have not scheduled any meetings with anyone since

Kindness has power

Why is it so hard to be kind? Why do you think kindness needs to be rewarded? Kindness has power and it is unfortunate that bullying still exists in communities, neighborhoods and other places. Demonstrating kindness is an important trait. Kindness has power. Digital art created on canvas. Since the pandemic mask mandates have been issued on March 9, 2020, I have been providing all of my services and work as a consultant online. Baba Agyei Akoto

At a very early age, I was exposed to the African tradition of men and women. My former principal during my elementary school years was Baba Agyei Akoto. He was not my father. Baba means father in Swahili and that is how I had to address my former male teachers.  "Baba Agyei Akoto was a respected scholar, educator, institution builder and author. He was the principal of NationHouse Positive Action Center – which has provided a rigorous African-centered education to students ranging from pre-school through high school, for over thirty eight years." Baba Agyei recently passed on December 4, 2019.       Nation Building. Digital art created on canvas. Afrika Abney

Women's History Month

Women's History Month is approaching soon. As a black woman with over 25 years of professional experiences. I can say that being a black woman in America is not easy. I have experienced sexism, racism, discrimination, and prejudice. Labeling women and stating that women should not wear certain types of clothing is stereotype. Claiming that all women have to long hair and wear make up is sexist. Putting women in a box is just disrespectful. All of this must stop because without women, where will society be?  Respect women regardless of their race! Quotes found on the Internet
